Royal Tichelaar Makkum is one of the Netherland’s oldest family businesses with a long history in the production of Friesian ceramics. Over the last fifteen years, the business has adopted a refreshing approach to deal with competition from developing countries with cheaper production costs. This entails both making use of the centuries old skills particular to the business while also embracing innovative designs from Dutch designers and architects. This allows new products to be made that meet both traditional and contemporary markets, while also allowing innovation to flow through the traditional arm of the business. This book describes the context in which these changes and products have been developed while also cataloguing many of the finished products, made by the likes of Hella Jongerius, Jurgen Bey, Marcel Wanders and Studio Job.
